Zirda, the Dawnwaker

A field guide to what cEDH lists agree on — and where pilots choose to diverge.

lists, one per pilot · maindeck slots

maindeck slots are Core or Near-core

Zirda lists agree on most of the deck. The real choices live in the last 20 or so cards.

Core · 5 of 5 pilots

Hard Core

cards appear in every list. This is the strongest empirical definition of the modern Zirda shell in this sample.

cards shown

Start here. Changes to this band should usually be intentional, because every list independently retained these cards.

Near-core · 4 of 5 pilots

Near-Core

cards are in nearly every list. A pilot who leaves one out usually does it on purpose.

A Near-core omission often says more about that pilot's philosophy than the card's power.

Majority-recurring cards are where strategic branches start to diverge. Overlapping packages here often point to a shared build lineage.

Shared Subpackages

A two-list overlap is weak evidence by itself. Several related overlaps together can reveal a deliberate package or build lineage.

Unique does not mean bad. It means the card is carrying a job the other pilots chose to solve differently.

Five Decks. Five Identities.

The shared shell is stable. The flex slots tell you what each pilot wants the game to become.

  • Ruby Monolith· Kevin Lanuk

    Turbo conversion + flexible protection

Ruby is the most explicitly proactive build in the sample. Birgi, Imperial Recruiter, Pyrokinesis and Ricochet Trap reinforce a premium on converting an opening into an early protected Monolith attempt. Its recurring packages point the same way: Desperate Ritual + Flashback, Bilbo's Gambit + Lorehold Charm + Talisman of Conviction, Final Fortune and Voltaic Key. The flex slots lean toward ritual velocity and interaction that stays live while Ruby is presenting its own win.

  • Boros Armory· Wayne J. Liu

Board constraint + artifact / treasure

Wayne's uniques are the clearest concentration of stax and permanent-based artifact infrastructure: Clock of Omens, Damping Sphere, Ethersworn Canonist, Grafdigger's Cage and Liquimetal Torque. Magda, Delivery Moogle, Trouble in Pairs, Metalworker and Remote Farm reinforce a plan that creates a favorable board state, then leverages artifacts and treasure while opponents navigate those constraints.

    View full decklist on Moxfield
  • Infinite Zirda· Alrex

    Alternate-combo redundancy + deeper engines

Infinite has the largest unique package. Rings of Brighthearth and Umbral Mantle are especially revealing because they add activated-ability and mana-engine infrastructure beyond the stock Zirda + Monolith plan. Its overlaps with ABC, Boros and Ruby show a willingness to combine recursion, artifact infrastructure and ritual velocity.

    View full decklist on Moxfield
  • ABC Zirda· Yenswi

Toolbox utility + broad reactive coverage

ABC's uniques are unusually diverse: Abrade, Angel's Grace, Idyllic Tutor, Molten Disaster and Untimely Malfunction. Rather than one compact combo package, its flex slots broaden the range of board states and opposing plans it can answer.

    View full decklist on Moxfield
  • Mt5 Zirda· Amochen

    Consensus-heavy hybrid

Mt5 has only two true uniques, the smallest unique footprint. Its identity comes from combining packages found elsewhere: Bilbo's Gambit + Lorehold Charm + Talisman with Ruby, and Magda + Delivery Moogle + Trouble in Pairs with Boros. It is the clearest hybrid in the sample.

Build the skeleton. Then choose your branch.

  1. Start with the Core.

  2. Treat Near-core cards as high-confidence questions, not easy cuts.

  3. Use Common and Fringe cards to choose your strategic branch.

  4. Use unique cards to tune for your meta and philosophy.

Zirda Consensus Field Guide

A new-player primer for cEDH Zirda.

Before calculating consensus frequency, normalize alternate-name / Universes Beyond reskin printings to the canonical Magic card identity. Known normalizations in this dataset:

  • Assaultron Invader = Walking Ballista — Fallout alternate-name printing.
  • Balin's Tomb = Ancient Tomb — The Lord of the Rings alternate-name printing.
  • Glittering Caves of Aglarond = Gemstone Caverns — The Lord of the Rings alternate-name printing.

These aliases must never be treated as separate cards in frequency counts or Pilot Tech.
